Back pain, insomnia, and more: Kyiv doctors tell about neurological problems of Ukrainians during the war site 44.ua

Біль у спині, безсоння і не тільки: столичні лікарі розповіли про неврологічні проблеми українців під час війниAir raid sirens, shelling, power outages, uncertainty about the future, separation from loved ones, financial instability, fear of losing loved ones or losing one’s possessions—all these and other consequences of the war are having a significant impact on the health of Ukrainians, regardless of whether they have remained in their homeland or left to seek refuge from the war.

Constant tension has brought neurological problems to the forefront, as war intensifies stress and exacerbates ailments: the most common of these are headaches and back pain, insomnia, panic attacks, and so on.

Specialists at the Bersenev Medical Center initiated a discussion with Ukraine’s leading media outlets to draw attention to the widespread problem of deteriorating health among Ukrainians and, specifically, the rise in neurological disorders across all age groups.

Honored Doctor of Ukraine Volodymyr Andriyovych Bersenev raised a serious issue regarding the culture of caring for one’s spine, which, unfortunately, is virtually nonexistent in Ukraine, whereas in many countries it is practiced from childhood.

For example, the doctor is certain that one should absolutely not engage in strength sports until the age of 21!

“Muscle and nerve cells need rest; you can exercise them, but you must not overwork them…” the doctor emphasized.

Neurologist Margarita Prokhorova explained that, unfortunately, it is impossible to stop the processes of spinal degeneration that occur with age; therefore, osteochondrosis is considered more of a condition than a diagnosis, and none of us has a perfect MRI.

That is why an individualized approach and the most precise and comprehensive treatment are crucial. The doctor reiterated that one should not self-medicate or search for answers online; it is better to see a doctor, where you can receive complete information about treatment and prevention.

Vladyslava Kulik, MD, PhD, Medical Director of the Pediatric Department and pediatric neurologist, explained that since the start of the war, the number of children seen by neurologists has increased—children who were considered healthy or had only minor neurological issues before the war, but with the onset of the war, against a backdrop of chronic stress, fear, separation from fathers, family, and friends, and a change of residence, they developed or experienced worsening neurological and psycho-emotional disorders, such as: anxiety, fears, nightmares, stuttering, enuresis (bedwetting), tantrums, emotional instability, and headaches.

But the biggest problem today is that a generation is growing up with their heads down. Gadgets have long since replaced active play, but COVID-19 and the war have exacerbated the situation, resulting in an increase in the number of children and adolescents complaining of headaches, neck and back pain, poor posture, vision problems, emotional instability, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. Unfortunately, parents do not always understand the complexity of the consequences of “tilted heads” for children, and therefore have mixed feelings about the need to limit screen time in their children’s lives.

The main goal is not to mask the symptoms or suppress the nervous system’s function, but rather to help it recover.
