About metamery

The developer of the metameric method of therapeutic action, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, and neurologist of the highest category is Volodymyr Andriyovych Bersenev.

Metamerism is a type of animal body structure characterized by the sequential arrangement of a series of identical or similar segments (metamers). Metamerism is a biological pattern common to all vertebrates and the vast majority of invertebrates. The human body consists of 33 metamers.

Structure of the cerebrospinal nervous system of a human embryo. 32nd day of development, length—10.2 mm. (Toldt, 1934, p. 912).

Each metamer consists of seven tissues: ectoderm-dermatome (skin and its derivatives), neurotome (nervous system); mesoderm-azot (arterial, venous, and lymphatic vessels), sclerot (skeletal region), myot (skeletal and smooth muscles), endoderm-enterot (internal organs), and glot (endocrine and immune systems). The main metameric structure consists of the spinal cord segment, the spinal nerve roots, and the spinal ganglia, located in the openings between adjacent vertebrae. Each neuron in the human body is assigned a clearly defined area of control (innervation) across all structures formed by this metamer.

The development of therapeutic methods and techniques was preceded by many years of fundamental research conducted at the Kyiv branch of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Neurology and Psychiatry under the leadership of Dr. V. A. Bersenev in the 1980s and 1990s.

The results of the focused work by a team of scientists led by V. A. Bersenev made it possible to speak of a breakthrough in medicine and the creation of a new direction in medical science. An opportunity arose to begin developing a technology for metameric treatment of neurological syndromes, most of which are accompanied by pain.

The research findings made it possible to generalize the patterns of metameric innervation of the skin, skeleton, muscle tissue, cardiovascular system, internal organs, and the immune and endocrine systems. This is the subject of, in particular, V. A. Bersenev’s monographs “Metameria” and “Applied Metameria,” as well as over a hundred of his articles.

Thanks to fundamental research, it has been possible to develop technologies for effective and scientifically sound medical care for patients with chronic pain syndromes associated with diseases of the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, and internal organs, as well as for children with neurological deficits, whose conditions were previously considered incurable.
