Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe inherited disease that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord responsible for muscle movement. In children, this manifests as muscle weakness, decreased muscle tone, difficulty swallowing and breathing, and a gradual loss of mobility. Early-onset types of SMA (I, II) progress rapidly, so it is extremely important to diagnose the condition early and begin treatment.
